Letter to the Parents of Associate Members

Dear Parents and Families of New Members,

My name is Maxwell Talley and I am the Associate Member Councilor (AMC) at Delta Chi. We are so excited to welcome your son into the fraternity as an Associate Member! Delta Chi is a fraternity founded on four pillars: promoting friendship, developing character, advancing justice, and assisting in the acquisition of a sound education. These four pillars influence every action that is made within the fraternity. This semester, we’ve been focusing on academic achievement and helping our members be the best students they can be. To do this, we’ve been bringing in speakers that have discussed ways to study more effectively, how to take better notes, and what campus resources are available if you need a little extra help. In addition, Delta Chi will pay for one tutor a semester if you get a B or above in the class. We also have scholarships available to our Associate Members to help make dues cheaper and give incentive to study a little harder. These scholarships are based on academic achievement and campus involvement outside of the fraternity. As AMC, it is my job to teach our Associate Members everything they need to know to be successful in the fraternity, along with how to be successful at ISU. A little about me: I am a sophomore in Computer Engineering here at Iowa State. I was initiated into the fraternity fall of 2015 and life hasn’t been the same since. The semester following my initiation, I worked with the AMC that taught me in order to learn the ropes of the position. This semester, I’ve taken the Associate Member program I was taught and expanded on it, adding in emphasis on life skills such as personal finance, time management, study skills, and even ways to dress better. All of the additions are meant to help your sons become better students, members of Delta Chi, and men of society.

Our Associate Member program just began on September 25th and as a part of the program, your son has been given a choice of committees to work with this semester. We have the Associate Members work with a committee to help them better understand how our chapter runs. They will assist the committee chair in any way that he needs. For example, those men working with our Philanthropy Chair will assist him in setting up our fall philanthropy, D-Chi Cheese Guys. At this event, we will be selling grilled cheeses to members of the Ames and Iowa State community to raise money for our philanthropic organization, the Jimmy V Foundation for Cancer Research. Having the AMs work with a committee also has the end goal of them running that committee in future semesters. I’m hoping that with the added responsibility, it will help them with their time management skills and also benefit their resumes.

If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me. My email address is mrtalley@iastate.edu and my phone number is (913) 424-9954. Also, please check out our website (www.iastatedeltachi.com) and Facebook page (@IowaStateUniversityDeltaChi)! We update it weekly with articles about what’s happening in the fraternity, member bios, and more. Within the next week, we will also have Associate Member bios up under the “Members” tab. Simply click on a name and it will link to a bio about each Associate Member. Thank you so much for reading this and for supporting your son in joining the brotherhood of a lifetime.

Sincerely,Maxwell Talley
